Genesee County health officials are seeing an outbreak of syphilis across the area, with more than 100 new cases reported last year alone.

The problem is startling and the numbers are soaring. The health department started noticing a rise in the number of cases about a year ago.

'Many people are not aware that it is still out there,' said Mark Valacak of the Genesee County Health Department. 'If you are sexually active, you are at risk for this disease.'"
