CDC: MSMs Hardest Hit by HIV, Syphilis

A new analysis from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention reaffirms previously studies that show that younger MSMs (men who have sex with men), which includes gay and bisexual men, are particularly hard-hit by STDs like HIV and syphilis.

MSMs in America are 44 times more likelythan men in the general population to become infected with HIV, and 40 times more likely than women in general, the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services announced. Syphilis rates for MSMs were 46 times greater than for other men, and 71 times greater than the rate of infection among women in general.

Alarming HIV and syphilis rates causes a call to action

At The National STD Prevention Conference in Atlanta this week the brow-raiser was the connection between HIV, syphilis, and men who have sex with men (MSM). Data was presented about the rate of HIV and syphilis diagnoses that showed a disproportionate impact among gay and bisexual men. According to the Center for Disease Control, new HIV diagnoses among MSM is more than 44 times that of other men and more than 40 times that of women. The rate of primary and secondary syphilis among MSM is more than 46 times that of other men and more than 71 times that of women.
